maxwell gillingham-ryan and Sara Marino

Rachel Ashwell, the founder of Shabby Chic, will host us at her new SoHo store for Apartment Therapy's October Meetup. She'll share with us how her passion for seeing the beauty of imperfections and a practical way of living shaped her style and company. We'll also have a chance to hear about Rachel's new book Shabby Chic Interiors!

The evening will kick off with one member of the group sharing his or her design challenged room.

Send us 3-5 photos of your problem room, a floor plan, along with a sentence explaining what you feel your biggest challenge is, and as a group we'll cure it! Please email saram @ apartmenttherapy . com and we’ll contact the owner of the selected room. We can’t wait to make suggestions and hopefully connect you with aspiring interior designers that may be in the crowd.

Please RSVP if you plan to attend and we hope to see you all Wednesday, October 14th!

    •  great organization, wonderful food, sweet gift, maxwell is a really superb interviewer, rachel couldnt be more interesting as a guest and as a person. it was just perfect. thanks
    •  Though my own personal style is not Shabby Chic, after hearing Rachel, I really appreciated how she stuck with her concept through and through. It was inspiring, especially during this recession, to hear how she overcame a lot of obstacles and remained resilient.

Fabulous. Maxwell was a stellar presenter and interviewer. Rachel was so gracious, down to earth and made sure that everyone was taken care of and comfortable. She shared her inspiration and personal memories with us. It was an honor!

Rachel Ashwell was so gracious and her story is inspiring.

Maxwell asked all the right questions. Everyone had a chance to talk to Rachel and you didn't run out of wine! I blogged after the event on www.BetterHomeNoGarden.com
    •  Rachel was very honest and a great speaker. Very inspirational!
    •  I thought this was a wonderful event. Rachel is truly an inspirational woman and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing her presentation and getting to meet her!
    •  This was my first and it was excellent.
    •  Rachel Ashwell clearly put a great deal of effort into making the meetup a pleasure for everyone, and it was appreciated. I adore her taste, her books, her shop - everything. And now, having heard her speak, I adore her too. She's terrific - hard-working, unassuming, charming, honest. She's a delightful person - very down to earth. Her description of how she started, managed and arrived at the phenomenon that is Shabby Chic was told with a warmth and humour that belied the very hard work and constant struggle, often under very difficult circumstances, that she must have undergone to have achieved what she's achieved. The woman's amazing. She just goes ahead and does things. No formal training, just trial and error. And she just keeps going. Lucky for all of us that she does.
    •  very interesting, informative, inspirational, great design motivator. great images and design cues
    •  loved it!
    •  I really appreciate the feedback that I received from the members who attended the Meetup at Shabby Chic. Everyone was helpful and not mean as to the room that I presented. I certainly will take many of the suggestions and try them out in my home. The people that commented were thoughtful and honest and friendly. Maxwell, you moved the meeting along well and didn't get 'bogged' down in meaningless conversations. I applaude you for your management skills. I have many suggestions that I can try and think about.

Really thoughtful presentation from someone who built themselves and their brand from the ground up. Hard work and believing in herself really paid off.
